While I did not see the Canada game, I attended the Ireland game and like what I saw.

The team is organized around getting the ball to Abby Wambach and why not since she has demonstrated a pronounced ability to score. And she did score against the Irish. However, she played defense too and involved the other players in the game.

I did not recognize some of the players as they are new but I thought they looked good. One player who came on in the second half as a right side attacker Natalie or Natasha Kai showed a lot of talent - fast and attacks with ferocity and a great shot and is always intent on scoring. The left back Chalupny (my spelling is probably off) also played very well even though the Irish we very passive and not running into space and spreading the American defense. Plus their forwards looked to be short and were playing against US players six inches taller. The 5-0 score was fair.

To me they did not look as good was the team of five years ago but I think they have the potential to build a team that will be very good after they get a few more games together.

anyway, Greg Ryan has been at it for a while with the us women's national
team. what do you think about how they are playing? their selections? will
we ever get the magic back? i am curious about what others see (assuming
some of you care).

I didn't see the Canada match, but in general I would say he has been doing
just fine.

I thought April was an utter disaster. She did little to develop new players
and lacked imagination when it came to tactics. Watching Germany approach
the game like men helped her get a clue, and towards the end she started
developing a few new players, but it should have been her that brought the
women's game to a new level. Instead we had to play catch up.

Greg has been pretty good about increasing the size of the pool, and his
teams have looked pretty organized and tactically aware.

I think the days of us destroying teams on a regular basis are over. The
rest of the world is starting to take women's soccer seriously, and the
talent level is increasing everywhere. However, right now I feel we are the
best team in the world.
