Most national team coaches wait until players force their way into the national team picture by virtue of their club play. We can't afford to do that. We need to continue to grab promising players and get them into camp and into less important matches *before* their play makes it a no-brainer. We need a large pool of players who are ready to step in and do a job. I want 4 or 5 guys at least on every MLS team who have had a taste of the national team and who now know what it will take to become an automatic selection for the US. That doesn't take anything away from having a separate person in charge of development. That is something we also need. Nevertheless, I believe player development should be in the job description of a US national team coach.
