Early on the NASL required that each team field two
'North Americans', on the pitch during the game.
North Americans meaning Yanks and Canadians.
This number was increased in 1982 or 1983. Three had
to be on the field. By this time however a number of
foreign players had rec'd their green cards and
counted as north Americans. The NASLPA had stipulated
an increase in NA presence as well as reserve teams by
1983 but the league ran out of money.
The DC team was Team America and only played in 1983.
The league folded in 1984 and after that it became a
regional semi pro type league.
