I asked McBride about that cap for an article back in 2003 when he moved  
into third place on the all-time scoring charts. The link is here:

Essentially, while he -was- capped for the full team, he didn't really  
think of himself as "on the national team" until after MLS started. The  
A-League/USISL team that he played for was the Milwaukee Rampage, IIRC - I  
recall some discussion after his goal against Portugal that the two of  
them used to run that exact play in Milwaukee, and wondered if there was  
any footage of that anywhere.

The team in Germany was Carl Zeiss Jena, IIRC.
