Yet the coaches universally hated the first-to-5-points system (which was just best-of-three in a different guise). They were the ones pushing for a simpler system, especially the 2-leg format.

Sigi Schmid wrote at MLSnet that the current format is an advantage (of sorts) to the higher seed. You have the 2nd leg in front of friendly fans, knowing what you need to do. You use your typical home routine. You don't have to worry about things like the flight being delayed. You have a bigger pool of subs to draw on. The golden goal overtime (grandfathered in for this season) is in front of your fans.

And the evidence is quite strong (see my earlier post) that the old best-of-three (or a hyptothetical single-elimination) was ample reward for a higher seed. They went to the 2-leg for other (scheduling, I would assert) reasons.

If you guys are so concerned that the first leg away puts the higher seed at a disadvantage, why not do with the Mexicans do in their "liguilla" (playoffs), if the teams are tied on aggregate after the 2nd leg, the higher seeded team advances.

Doesn't that increase the advantage for finishing higher during the regular season?
