I'm not sure I'd agree with a "no foreigners" restriction, but I'd
certainly put Bob Bradley at or near the top of any list of candidates.
Arena was a shoo-in in '98 because he'd lead DC to three straight MLS
Cups, winning two of them.
For the fun of it, here's a list of MLS coaches and their honors, sorted
by number of honors. "Honors" in this case is an appearance in MLS Cup, or
winning the Supporters Shield. The Open Cup isn't included because I don't
have time to do so - please feel free to re-work this to include that.
Based on this, I'd say Sigi would have to be a contender, as would Bradley
and Yallop. I'd discount Gansler, Sarachan, and Rongen because they've
either inherited great teams (Rongen in '99) or had only one good year.
While that's not really fair to Sarachan, the point of the chart is to see
who has a consistent track record of success in MLS - which while Sarachan
made a good start, he just hasn't been in the league long enough to have a
track record of any length.
My 2 cents,
Matt
