I am for limiting the amount of
foreigners. However, where that limit is, I know not.
I also think we should limit the QUALITY of
foreigner and have criteria as to what
they can bring to the league....NOT just because
they are "affordable."
You say we need more Americans playing at
a high level.
I agree. However, if Foreign
players can make that level even higher....
then we NEED that as well. If all we have
are yanks, I think that would
limit our growth, somewhat.
Obviously, I would like to see top talent
over here. I would love to see
a top notch international or two on every
squad. We simply do not
have the money or support for that yet. How
would it be to lure, say
a Ronaldino away from Barca, or a Van Persie from
Arsenal, or a
Mutu from Chelsea etc etc etc.
That would ramp up the level our boys would
have to play week in and out.
If it could be limited, it could
help.
All the best;
Jeff

There will be some American players who won't make it on to a
roster with the addition of more foreigners. So...not everyone will
think it is a good thing. I thought the current setup was just
fine.
If
you want an example of how it may be bad for US Soccer, look no further than
Brian Ching. He got pushed off of the LA roster with the signing of
Carlos Ruiz. Luckily for him and the Quakes, the Quakes didn't have an
open foreign spot so he got that roster spot. He has now risen to the
occasion for both MLS and the Quakes.
Of
course, you hope guys like this rise to the top regardless of their
situation. But that doesn't always happen. Ching could easily have
given up on MLS when dismissed from the Galaxy and gone on to other things
that paid wage that you could actually live on in California. Lucky
for us he didn't.
Generally, l'm against the importation of more foreign talent because
it stunts the growth of the American player. How much it affects us is
immeasurable, but in general, the more Americans playing at a higher level,
the better.
Darrin
MLS has said this adnaseum. They
will follow the same rules. But, you should know, that Garber answered
my question about increasing foreign allotments in 05 due to expansion, and
he said that it was very much under consideration. So everyone will be able
to have more foreign talent next year. Which is a real good
thing. Cheers! Robert.

I just want to check something with you
folks. The new Chivas LA team will to have to adhere to the same
player rules (Green card, etc...) that the other teams do, wont
they?
IF they do I don't care who owns the team. I
guess I would have a problem with the US based-Mexican owned team using
nothing but foreigners.
