Ah, the jibes. I so love this nonsense.
Yes, George Graham was not the most entertaining of managers but at least
he played a BACK 4.....NOT A BACK 5 like the Greeks!!!!!!! !!!!
You must have forgotten Rioch in the middle as well. The decades have
passed Mike. Get over the Graham years, we have.
The Greeks play negative "bunker" football. Since Bora, the US does not!
The only reason we (USA) played "counter=attack" v Mexico was because of the
short time of rest between matches. How do I know this? Bruce said so
exactly! Bruce, to his credit, changed his tactics depending on the rest of
his players, and the opponent we were playing. Think we played "bunker" ball
v Germany??? Greece has no change of tactics; they bunker with 5 across the
back, hack down anything that runs more than 2 yards and hope to score on
set pieces. Yes, exciting stuff.
The styles are nothing of the sort compared with the US in 02' except for
Mexico....and that match we played with 4 across the back,....not 5 like the
Greeks
Let's be honest here. Greece played a back 5 and just bunkered. Period.
Not only that, anyone within an arms reach they pretty well just TOOK
DOWN!!! Yes, let's here it for them! The only thing that amazes me is they
managed to keep a player from receiving a red card every match, however they
managed to spread their fouls out evenly throughout the team. We have the
nerve to call this "tactical?"
Great, yes, they wont he tournament by playing foil to everyone else's
football. yeah rah. The Italians have been ABUSED on this list for
playing negative tactics through the years, but now Greece, just because
they are an underdog, get plaudits for playing negatively?????
Can't wait to see more of this crap.

Ironic comments coming from an Arsenal fan, a team that until loaded
with Frenchmen recently, were the most notoriously "anti-football" in
Europe. How many times did opponents hit the woodwork? I repeat. They
beat the hosts TWICE, the reigning champs and arguably the best side in
the tourney once, drew with Spain. I daresay the possibilty of results
like this, where they don't just hand out the trophy on reputation,
makes football all the more attractive to me. As I noted earlier, the
similarity of styles between the Greeks here and USA 02 is unmistakeable.

They managed to grind out results and ride their luck....yes, when
opposition hit the woodwork so many times and dominate play against you,
you run your luck. They were playing more talented teams and managed to
turn it into a game of attrition rather than that of football.
Greece won...the sport was the loser.

I am curious as to how the Greeks 'deserve' this---
championship. Their defensive posture and play
against those that tried to 'play', those that are
clearly better sides, France-Rep.Tcheque-Portugal.
Creating is difficult, destroying easy.
Sad day for attacking soccer.

Greece 1 - Portugal 0=====
The goal in the 2nd half was a nice one. A well
placed header off a corner
kick. It was interesting listening to an abbreviated
version of the Greek
broadcast. The 'casters could hardly contain
themselves after the goal. I
doubt anyone who listened to the pay-per-view call
got the same excitement
in the voices. :p
Cheers to the Greeks! They deserve it!
