Hey all,
My apologies for not speaking up before this - here's a list of
everything I know that's going on this weekend. Please feel free to foward
this far and wide, post on web sites, etc:
* Friday
The Crew is running their first youth tournament this weekend
(http://www.thecrew.com/show.cfm?article=624), so if you want the whole
friggin' weekend could be packed with game-watching. The tournament
directors have even put a gap in the schedule so you can make the US game
on Sunday without missing anything.
* Saturday
Saturday during the day, the Crew youth tournament continues, and I think
people were planning on assembling a pickup game at OSU. The best place
for a pick-up game has been south of Ohio Stadium
(http://www.osu.edu/map/towers.html) - so check that out if you're looking
to play a bit before the watching begins.
Saturday night, the Crew host the Wizards - kickoff is 7:30 PM. Should be
a good game, the Crew are on a hot streak and the Wizards are always a
tough opponent. Plus, you can see the three would-be US Internationals :-)
Post-game (or instead of the game, if you feel like spurning American
domestic soccer) there's at least two places of interest that I've heard
of so far:
1) Fado Irish Pub
(http://www.fadoirishpub.com/fado_pub_main.php?city=columbus) at the
Easton Town Center (http://www.eastontowncenter.com/) will be a hopping
place, and the manager there has said we're welcome to show up, drink a
few, and celebrate. We don't have the place reserved or anything, so their
normal rules apply, but it's a favorite hangout of a number of the
Columbus Sammers.
2) The Halo Effect (http://www.thehaloeffect.com/), a band with several
Sammers in it, is in town on a tour (how cool is that - scheduling your
band's concert tour to land in Columbus the day before a qualifier...).
They're playing Cafe Bourbon Street (2216 Summit St.) at 9:30 on Saturday
night, so if you hightail it out of the Crew game, you shouldn't miss too
much of their set.
WHO: The Halo Effect
WHERE: Café Bourbon St in Columbus, OH
2216 Summit St. Columbus, OH 43201
WHEN: June 12th (night before the match)
E-mail Chris @ keem78@yahoo.com
If anybody else knows of any soccer-related activities on Saturday night,
email me at bernhardt.7@osu.edu and I'll try to get the word out. None of
these is an "official" activity or anything, but whereever you go feel
free to wear red or any soccer/Sam's Army gear you've got - guerilla
marketing is never a bad idea :-)
* Sunday
Sunday morning, I'm not sure what time the grounds open for tailgating -
but the location will be the same place it's always been - off the
southeast corner of the stadium on the edge between the parking lot and
the grassy drainage area. Bring food and drink, an enthusiastic attitude,
and a willingness to meet new friends, and renew old acquaintances.
Sunday at 1 PM, the quarterfinals in Korea officially mean nothing. We
will be one of over a hundred countries trying to gain entry into Germany
- so get up, get loud, and let's help bring our country that all-important
first win. We have yet to lose or even concede a goal at Crew Stadium, so
let's not make this be the first time for either.
Wear red, and if you've got one (or can get one) bring a 3'x5' US flag to
wave. There won't be a ribbon trick at this game, so we'll have to make
our own visuals by being a huge, red, flag-waving mass of humanity.
Something tells me this won't be a problem :-)
After the game, I'm not aware of anything going on - beyond finding a
place to celebrate the beginning of yet another qualifying campaign.
Thanks to everyone who's coming out for this game! See you at the
stadium...
