The U.S. Men's Team Has Gained the World's Respect in the World's Game

IT was around midnight, in the South Korean city of Ulsan. A bunch of Yanks 
were typing intensely before catching the bus for a five-hour ride back to 
Seoul. 
The United States had just lost to Germany in the quarterfinals of the 2002 
World Cup - farther than the United States had been in 72 years.
Three German sportswriters packed up their laptops and stopped by our little 
American cluster. 
''You guys outplayed us,'' one of them said. ''You should have won.''
''One-nothing,'' I said. ''Germany won.''
