He was not cut, just pulled out for reasons not stated in the article.

Frankly, I think his days are numbered and will be suprised if he makes a
final starting lineup for World Cup 06, provided they qualify of course. His
speed has drastically reduced from watching him play for America. He's
another player who is getting to old to hang with the level of play that is
expected, but has enough clout in the Federation and on his club to be a
consistent starter. Next stop? MLS. :( Hopefully, he'll retire first.
