He's not a gimmick, but playing him for marketing
reasons instead of because the coach feels it's the
right thing to do is a gimmick.
If people are only interested in the league because of
Freddy, don't you think they'll walk away if he's not
dominating the games? If their attention span is so
short and their interest in soccer so minute, they'll
find a reason to leave when they are immediately
satisfied.
For a change, MLS is putting the game first and
marketing second. Yet people complain.
