Lots of soccer people keep asking why the WUSA couldn't survive when the
1999 Girls of Summer were so popular.

To try to sum up all that went wrong for the WUSA would take an entire
sports section worth of financial details and bad decisions. In an effort to
keep things simple, we'll just hit the glaringly obvious.

They should have been watching Major League Soccer.

Now, first understand, there are no illusions here that MLS is anywhere near
as successful and popular as the NFL. However, *MLS is still here after
seven and a half years. The USFL and XFL combined didn't last that long.*
