The scrum cap is basically ear protection. Your 2nd row and your number eight have to stick their heads between two other guys' thighs all day long. Imagine the chafing! More importantly, it's a lot harder for an opposing scrummer to rake your ear off in a loose ruck with the cleats of his boot if you are thusly attired. The scrum cap is good for little else. The shoulder padding is usually worn by the props and the hooker who have to engage their opposite numbers in the scrum. From: Dan Veshia <DanV@FirstEquipment.com> Cauliflower ear, concussion, bl;ah, blah, blah. It is headgear worn to protect the player. i am sure that there is some little bit of padding to protect them from the pounding as well as the smacking. And yes, the shoulder "pads" are not at all like the american football variety.
