James has it right, as I remember. San Diego came to town a couple of times
with the headbands, then some of the Beat players started wearing the
things. I remember Hooper and Sawa, in particular, wearing them. I can't
speak to their protective power, but I got the impression that the player
had much less control on directional heading and especially long defensive
clearing headers.

As long as the headbands don't pose a danger to other players (it doesn't
look like they do), I don't think there should be a prohibition on them.
Likewise, I definitely don't think they should ever be mandated by a team,
league, or association. We are beginning in our society to have real
problems evaluating and accepting risk. Especially troubling is the
tendency in many people to want to mitigate other people's risk, even when
it is none of their business.

It was actually many of the San Diego Spirit players who started wearing
them, as I think a player or two there had an endorsement deal of some kind
with Full90, the maker of their version of headgear.

I do know that a few Atlanta players, Hooper among them, started wearing
them as well.

Ironically, one of the San Diego players who wore them suffered a
concussion, but it was from a knock to the back of the head and wasn't even
diagnosed until a few days later. I didn't see any impact on the quality of
headers and they seemed to stay on fine for them.
