Kids Will Take Over the World
By David Mcdonnell
The Mirror (UK) - Friday, September 12, 2003
WAYNE ROONEY is not the only teenage sensation currently taking the world
of
football by storm.
There are a host of other young players ready to challenge the Everton
and
England striker for the title of world's most exciting teenage player.
Manchester United made Cristian Ronaldo the most expensive teenager in
British football in July when they signed the 18-year-old for
£12.25million
from Sporting Lisbon.
Ronaldo made a breathtaking debut on the opening day of the season,
prompting Sir Alex Ferguson to say: "He's one of the most exciting
players
I've ever seen."
Ronaldo's best friend, 19-year-old Ricardo Quaresma, is also regarded as
one
of the game's most dynamic young stars. United were interested in the
versatile winger, before he signed for Barcelona in a £7m deal.
Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres is seen as Spain's answer to
Rooney
for, like England's new young hero, he plays for the team he has
supported
all his life.
Real Madrid and Barcelona tried to sign the prolific 19-year-old, who has
already scored 14 times in 29 games in La Liga. He missed a penalty in
Spain's win over Ukraine on Wednesday.
Freddy Adu is the 14-year-old American youngster who already has a
$1million
sponsorship deal with Nike lined up and is tipped to emulate Pele by
starring in the 2006 World Cup at just 17.
Inter Milan had a six-figure offer to oversee his development turned down
by
the Ghanaian-born striker's family.
Spurs failed with a £7m bid to sign 18-year-old midfielder Diego from
Brazilian club Santos over the summer, problems over a work permit
thwarting
the deal.
The title of most expensive teenager in world football remains with
Antonio
Cassano, the 18-year-old who joined Roma from Bari for £19m in 2001.
Back home, Rooney is not the only English teenager tipped for greatness.
In
16-year-old midfielder Tom Huddlestone, Derby County have a player who
has
already been backed to reach the very top.
