[nas] Post-2010 Defense (was Re: New Yank!) by pb nas 13 June 2009 10:51 UTC |

Once South Africa is done, I'll be concerned if Bocanegra is much more than a stopgap. He and Onyewu have formed a good partnership, probably as good as any the US has ever seen, but he's approaching the downhill portion of his career. At the same time, quite a few of our alternatives are mature but younger. Personally, I'd pencil in Chad Marshall as a starting central defender for Brazil 2014. At left back, I don't think we can rule out either Jonathan Bornstein or Heath Pearce, both of whom are only 24 now and still have room to improve. Then you've got Kevin Alston, Anthony Wallace, and Rodney Wallace. They're all the same age (Alston recently turned 21, the other two are still 20), and each of them is as good a prospect for this role as we've seen in recent years. Hopefully, one of them becomes our first locked-down starter in this role since David Regis.
