Much to do today, but I'll try to get through a full roundup:
EVERTON: If you're a fan of the club, this is a welcome win -- 3-2 away to pesky Stoke with two players (Marouane Fellaini and Segundo Castillo) making their debuts. If you're a fan of Tim Howard or the U.S. national team, you're a little uneasy about two long throw-ins setting up the Stoke goals and the BBC Player Rater showing the U.S. keeper with the lowest marks of any starter. In any case, 10th place -- separated from fifth place only by goal difference -- isn't a terrible place to be after four games.
NOTTINGHAM FOREST: 2-1 home loss to Burnley, thanks in part to a controversial penalty decision, leaves Forest teetering at 21st place, just above the relegation zone, though it's a little early for such things. Robert Earnshaw scored a good poacher's goal. On Tuesday, the squad travels to third-place Preston. Andrew Cole (formerly Andy) still hasn't debuted but might do so Tuesday.
AMERICANS ABROAD
Should playing time in Europe be the be-all, end-all in terms of picking the U.S. national team? Then consider this: Freddy Adu and Jozy Altidore played over the weekend. Clint Dempsey and Eddie Johnson did not. And Adu and Altidore's teams play at a considerably higher level than Johnson's. Dempsey, at least, is playing well on the national team and is just caught up in the numbers at Fulham right now.
Neven Subotic is once again on the scoresheet.
- Freddy Adu (Monaco, France): Late sub in 2-0 win over Lorient
- Jozy Altidore (Villarreal, Spain): An injury to U.S.-raised striker Giuseppe Rossi helped open the door for Altidore to replace Guillermo Franco at halftime. Soccernet: "His replacement Jozy Altidore immediately looked more confident."
- DaMarcus Beasley (Rangers, Scotland): played first half of 2-1 win vs. Kilmarnock but missed a chance and subbed out; manager Walter Smith admitted to BBC he was "a bit unfair to DaMarcus" after a tough week of qualifiers.
- Gregg Berhalter (1860 Munich, Germany): Monday at 2:15 p.m. ET vs. Duisburg
- Carlos Bocanegra (Rennes, France): Full 90 in 1-1 draw with Le Havre
- Michael Bradley (Borussia Moenchengladbach, Germany): on bench for 5-1 loss to Hannover
- Edgar Castillo (Santos, Mexico): Second-half sub in 1-1 draw with Necaxa
- Steve Cherundolo (Hannover, Germany): did not play; not sure of status
- Bobby Convey (Reading, England): last 15 in 2-0 loss to Ipswich
- Jay DeMerit (Watford, England): Full 90 in 2-0 loss to Sheffield Wednesday
- Clint Dempsey (Fulham, England): on bench as surging Fulham beat Bolton 2-1
- Maurice Edu (Rangers, Scotland): debuted for Rangers in 2-1 win due to Kevin Thomson injury and played 65 minutes
- Brad Friedel (Aston Villa, England): at Tottenham, 2 p.m. Mon., Setanta
- Sonny Guadarrama (Morelia, Mexico): on bench for 2-2 draw with UAG
- Brad Guzan (Aston Villa, England): at Tottenham, 2 p.m. Mon., Setanta
- Marcus Hahnemann (Reading, England): Full 90 in 2-0 loss to Ipswich
- Daniel Hernandez (Jaguares, Mexico): No sign of him in 2-1 win over Indios
- Kamani Hill (Wolfsburg, Germany): Nein.
- Tim Howard (Everton, England): See above
- Eddie Johnson (Cardiff City, England): on bench for 0-0 draw with Bristol City
- Oguchi Onyewu (Standard Liege, Belgium): Full 90 in 2-0 win over team you've never heard of
- Michael Orozco (San Luis, Mexico): not on roster for 2-1 loss to America
- Jesus Padilla (Chivas, Mexico): on bench for 5-2 loss to Pachuca
- Heath Pearce (Hansa Rostock, Germany): Second-half sub and yellow card as Rostock rallied for 2-2 draw with Mainz
- Frank Simek (Sheffield Wednesday, England): still out
- Jonathan Spector (West Ham, England): no sign of him; what changes will Zola make after 3-2 loss?
- Neven Subotic (Borussia Dortmund, Germany): Scored the first goal in Dortmund's three-goal rally to draw Schalke.
- Danny Szetela (Brescia, Italy): full 90 in 1-1 draw with Bari
- Jose Francisco Torres (Pachuca, Mexico): 75 minutes in 5-2 win over Chivas
- Marco Antonio Vidal (Indios, Mexico): second-half sub, yellow card in 2-1 loss to Jaguares
