L.A. GALAXY TIES SANTOS LAGUNA IN HOUSTON, 1-1
HOUSTON, TX (Wednesday, November 06, 2002) - The 2002 MLS Cup Champion Los
Angeles Galaxy tied Mexican First Division club Santos Laguna, 1-1, in an
international friendly on Wednesday night at the University of Houston's
Robertson Stadium. Despite a missed penalty kick by Galaxy midfielder Simon
Elliott, L.A. made a late charge to tie the game with a goal from forward
Brian Mullan.
The Galaxy controlled the game for the first 15 minutes pressuring the
Santos Laguna defense only to be denied by goalkeeper Adrian Martinez.
However, the best opportunity came in the 24th minute, when Chris Albright
dribbled in on goal, but the keeper denied the Galaxy striker's attempt.
For Santos, the formula was Rodrigio "Pony" Ruiz and Jared Borguetti, who
tried to produce dividends, but a stingy Galaxy defense smothered all
attempts from the skillful attackers. In the 29th minute, Galaxy goalkeeper
Matt Reis denied a Ruiz shot, and minutes later a header by Borguetti off a
centering pass by Héctor Altamirano. It was the clearest chance on goal for
Santos of first half.
In the second half, Galaxy coach Sigi Schmid took action and made eight
changes that showed results immediately. Substitutes Brian Mullan and Gavin
Glinton combined to challenge Martinez, but nonetheless it was Santos' Ruiz,
who notched the first goal.
In the 65th minute, the Galaxy had an opportunity to level the match when
Enrique Vizcarra fouled the L.A.'s Isaias Bardales Jr. for a penalty kick.
However, Santos 'keeper Adriano was up to the challenge and stopped the
ensuing shot by Simon Elliott.
The Galaxy offense continued to attack until it evened the score in the 84th
minute. Collecting an Elliott cross, Victorine fired a low pass into the box
for Mullan, who redirected a ball with the outside of his right foot and in
to the back of the net.
Defender Craig Waibel was the first player claimed (6th pick) in
today's waiver draft by the San Jose Earthquakes. Waibel, who was waived by
the Galaxy on Tuesday, started and played 90 minutes as a guest player in
tonight's match vs. Santos Laguna.
Up next, the Los Angeles Galaxy return to Los Angeles to continue
its offseason training schedule at the Rose Bowl. For more information
