Tht's probably an overestimate. Should Hong actually hit those
incentives, it'll mean he was doing something right on the field, which
in itself would sell tickets that his mere presence would not (since
he's a defender, some of those are bound to be team incentives, and
basically all of them should be related to making a contribution to the
team). MLS often doesn't bat an eye at paying a guy $250k plus
incentives just because he's a good player. It's the *difference*
between what they're paying Hong versus wht they'd pay another player of
equal talent that constitutes what one could consider the 'Hong
premium.' This is a harder number to arrive at, but it's certainly less
than his full remuneration. (Consider also that if Hong stays for more
than a year, you have to pro-rate that transfer fee over the time he's
here).
