CREW HAS 78 PLAYERS COME TO OPEN
TRYOUTS ON SATURDAY AT OBETZ
Players Come From Nine States Other Than Ohio And From As Far Away As
Scotland

COLUMBUS, Ohio -  Seventy-eight players attended open tryouts for
the Columbus Crew on Saturday, Nov.2 at The Crew's Training Center at Obetz.

Columbus Crew Director of Soccer Business Development Mike Lapper
organized and  conducted the tryouts, with help from player/assistant coach
Robert Warzycha, current players Duncan Oughton and Jon Busch and former
player Billy Thompson.  Of the seventy-eight players who attended the all
day tryout, two have earned an invitation back to one of The Crew's
preseason camps for another look with the official squad.

"The open tryouts were a great success," said Lapper.  "The turnout
was something that we did not expect but one that we were very pleased with.
The quality of soccer that was displayed was impressive.  Even individuals
who did not make the cut were happy with the experience and were gateful for
the opportunity that was provided to them.  We were looking for a diamond in
the rough and may have found one and perhaps even two players that will have
the opportunity to show their skills with the current Crew team.  Overall,
it was a great day for those in attendance and the entire Crew organization.
We would like to thank all those who came out and are very appreciative of
all the effort they put into these tryouts."

Players trying out came from nine states other than Ohio and one
flew over from Airdrie, Scotland.  The states the players came from were:
Arizona, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New York, North Carolina,
North Dakota and Pennsylvania.  The player from Bismarck, North Dakota
bussed 1,195 miles which took him over 30 hours to complete to get to
Columbus to attend the tryout.

The tryouts were broken up into three sessions.  The first two
sessions were training sessions, one from 8 a.m.-10:30 a.m. and the second
from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.  After the first two sessions the number of
players were pared to 32.  Those 32 players then participated in three
20-minute games.
