I think that the way the Revs handled the seating arrangements (most fans on one side of the stadium) made the crowd appear larger.  I liked the idea (I suggested the MLS do this a few years ago!) as it looked great on TV to see a "throng" of fans in the stands.  Granted the when the other side of the stadium was shown the place looked.... well like Arrowhead.  Those shots however were not shown to frequently.
