I played for the USA in the World Cup finals in 1994 and 1998. During the qualifiers for the '98 World Cup a guy connected to Mexican Football Federation approached myself and John Harkes in a Dallas hotel. It was touch and go whether Mexico qualified and he wanted to know if we were interested in playing below our best in our final qualifying game. The minute that happened we reported it to US officials.

How could this be?  Mexico qualified with 2 games to spare in 97.  Why would they want us to throw the last game?  Could he have meant El Salvador instead of Mexico?  But then again that wouldn't tie in with Dallas as the final qualifier against El Salvador was in Foxboro.  Unlike 2001, Mexico was on top of the qualifying table from the very beginning.  The whole thing just doesn't make sense.
