This isn't surprising. When I first moved to the midwest and later to the
south, the one thing I found was that your family's country of origin
just wasn't important like it was in the northeast. My wife, who is from
Little Rock, literally had no idea what the origin of her family name was.
I also had a fellow student in grad school named Wozniak. I asked her if
it was Polish of Slovak, and she just sort of blinked and shrugged. In
contrast, your background meant a whole lot in the northeast, even if
you'd been there for many generations. My mom's side had come from
Germany in the late 1700s, and they still kept many custom, especially
food. They also spoke only German till the World Wars, and I'd even
strill get scolded in German.
