No, it's not. If you see a player has slipped in ability or does not match up well against a player in a particular game. You substitute before disaster strikes not after it strikes. When Dooley was with the nats in qualifying he was playing well leading up to France. He started to slip 2 months before the WC I can't believe Sampson did not see that. He should have sat him then, and used another player after that he did not he stayed with Dooley.
Also some teams sometimes just don't match up well. So you might constantly beat or play well against a team that your opponent can't beat. But that opponent can be able to beat you.
There is a lot of truth in the phrase your only as good as your last game.
